This poster was created for the 2008 San Diego State University Spring Show Poster Contest. The challenge was to create a conceptual poster to promote the Graphic Design and Multimedia Spring Show. The show featured undergraduate to graduate work, as well as a senior portfolio review. The only limitations to this assignment were that we had to use 11"x17" format and make use of only two colors in order to screen print (tints and shades were ok).
My concept was to show the progression of the student at SDSU. The ripening of the bananas exemplified this progression of the art student. The green banana represents an incoming freshman, whereas the ripe banana on the right has a stamp of approval from SDSU and signifies graduation from the program.
I wanted to keep the design simple in order to focus on the concept. I achieved this by relying on color, form, and composition in order to attract the viewer. I used Garamond for the Title and secondary type because it lent itself well to the organic shapes that the bananas possesed.
In all 30 posters were submitted for this contest. This particular poster tied for first place among student and faculty votes.
